NASA's new infrared telescope, WISE, has released its first images.

The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer has returned more than 250,000 raw images. To celebrate its performance thus far, NASA selected four of them for processing and publication.

Above, you can see the comet, Siding Spring, which was discovered in 2007 by Australian observers. Its 10 million-mile-long tail is made of glowing dust pushed away from its nucleus by the solar wind. (More WISE photos)

In the image below, we see the Andromeda galaxy's dusty spiral arms. WISE has four detectors in the infrared spectrum, which measure light with wavelengths of 3.4, 4.6, 12, and 22 microns. By using only the detectors that can measure the longest wavelengths, scientists can generate images like the one below, which shows just the dusty arms of the galaxy, which are heated by young stars. Soldiers, you are now cleared to use your thumb drives again. U.S. Strategic Command has lifted its ban on the tiny drives, memory sticks, CDs and other "removable flash media" on military networks.

The repeal, first reported by InsideDefense.com, may be good news for troops, who depend on the drives to move data in bandwidth-starved locations. But it may be good news for hackers, too. The original network security concerns which prompted the ban haven't really been addressed, one Strategic Command cyber defense specialist tells Danger Room: "Not much changed. StratCom simply does not have the support to enforce such a ban indefinitely." READ MORE

Sir James Dyson, the founder of the company, said: "It took us five years to painstakingly compress and rebuild every single component."

Space diver Felix Baumgartner will try to smash the nearly 50-year-old record for the highest jump this year, becoming the first person to go supersonic in freefall. The stunt could help engineers design escape systems for space flights. On 16 August 1960, US Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger made history by jumping out of a balloon at an altitude of some 31,333 meters. "I stood up and said a prayer and stepped off," he recalled. Since then, many have tried to break that record but none have succeeded.

Now Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner has announced he will make the attempt, with help from Kittinger and sponsorship from the energy drink company Red Bull.

Baumgartner, who became the first person to cross the English Channel in freefall in 2003, will be lofted to a height of 36, 575 meters in a helium balloon. After floating up for roughly three hours, he will open the door of a 1-ton pressurized capsule, grab the handrails on either side of the exit, and step off, potentially breaking records for the highest parachute jump, as well as the fastest and longest freefall. A renewable-energy "oasis" slated to be built in 2010 may serve as a proving ground for new technologies designed to bring green living to the desert. The planned research center is part of the Sahara Forest Project—but that doesn't mean it will be built in Africa. Sahara means "desert" in Arabic, and the center is meant to be a small-scale version of massive green complexes that project managers hope to build in deserts around the globe. Galaxy has crammed two 55nm G92 GPUs on one PCB. As of late, we've heard quite a bit about Nvidia's Fermi-based GF100 video card and the release of ATI's DirectX 11-compatible offerings. However, EXPreview has learned that Galaxy is working on a dual-core graphics card that uses an older generation of Nvidia technology: two 55nm G92 GPUs - each with 128 processing cores - on a single PCB.

But a display startup called Prysm believes that its technology, called laser phosphor display (LPD), has the perfect combination of picture quality, energy efficiency, and manufacturing simplicity to have a chance of breaking through.

Firefox 3.6 is very nearly a done deal. Mozilla has pushed out a second release candidate and Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's™ Director of Firefox, tells Webmonkey that the final browser release should arrive by the end of January. That's great news for Firefox fans, but it also typically brings a bit of letdown with it - all those features that didn't make it in Firefox 3.6 will now have to wait some time before the next revision rolls around. Or not.

Phone maker Nokia has said it will "defend itself vigorously" after Apple launched the latest salvo in an ongoing legal wrangle between the two firms. On 15 January, Apple filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) asking it to block Nokia imports to the US. It is the latest move in a series of legal proceedings that started in October when Nokia sued Apple. The Finnish firm alleged that Apple's iPhone infringed 10 of its patents. Apple is also being sued by Kodak.

Now that Windows 7 has settled in inside consumer homes after the considerable marketing push from retail, attention is turning to Microsoft's next step in development. ZDNet blogger Adrian Kingsley-Hughes claims to have reports that Windows 7 SP1 is already undergoing testing and has seen several lists of post-RTM build numbers. Are you eager for SP1? Seems to be that those already running Windows 7 seem happy enough with it and can't see any immediate need for a service pack. That said, the flip-side is that there are those who will, no matter what, hold out for SP1. Who's right and who's wrong? To be honest, unless you are involved with Microsoft, it doesn't really matter.

We've all been around computers long enough to know that upgrading a graphics card is an easy job. Yes, opening up the computer case and swapping cards may look like open heart surgery to those unfamiliar with the procedure, which is why some "experts" who handle this sort of thing for non-savvy gamers can command such a high fee. But, to paraphrase Les Grossman, a nutless monkey could do the job. This is according to a recent Youtube video uploaded by ATI as a stunt.

Whatever happened to quantum computers? A few years ago, it seemed, it was just a case of a tweak here, a fiddle there, and some kind of number-crunching Godzilla would be unleashed upon us. Just as digital processors changed our lives in ways hard to imagine a few decades ago, the monstrous information processing power of individual atoms and electrons would mean that computing - and the world - would never be the same again.

Will quantum computers do for the 21st century what digital computers did for the 20th?

NAS has become a popular solution, and most higher-end NAS machines are basically low-end PCs, powered by Intel Atom chips or ULV setups. The N4B2 from LG is one such device, but it takes the PC similarities even further with the addition of optical. Shown off by CEO Paul Otellini, the LG-manufactured GW990 is more of an MID or 'superphone' than it is a smartphone. Packing a 5-inch screen with 720p HD video playback, two cameras (one forward facing and one traditionally placed on the back of the device) the device runs on the Linux-based Moblin OS. Deep within the Kairei Indian hydrothermal vent field, two-and-one-half miles below the central Indian Ocean, scientists have discovered a gastropod mollusk, whose armor could improve load-bearing and protective materials in everything from aircraft hulls to sports equipment. READ MORE

A recently discovered gastropod from the Kairei Indian hydrothermal vent, called Crysomallon squamiferum, has an unusual shell structure superbly suited for protecting it against penetration attack. The outer layer is granular and composed of iron sulfide. The middle layer is much thicker than other mollusks generally have. These key points could be important in mollusc-inspired vehicle or personnel armor construction. Sometimes it is hard to get newborn babies to fall asleep by themselves. All the noise around them may be keeping them stimulated and awake; noises such as traffic, sirens, lawnmowers, ringing phones or even mommy and daddy's voice in the next room. These sounds are all new to baby.

A White Noise Machine will absorb and maybe even eliminate those sounds and at the same time be soothing. Some sounds a White Noise Machine makes are a waterfall, the hum of a fan, or ocean waves.

It's a show geared towards teenagers and focuses on teenage sex. It seems everyone is "doing it." (A much-loved phrase by Kelso on That 70's Show.) I believe they are trying to bring awareness to teenagers regarding teenage sex and the consequences that could come with it. They even offer where teenagers can find help if they need it at the end of each show. The premise is good, but the show is losing it's appeal with the overuse of the word sex. Is using that word over and over again supposed to get teenagers to tune in? The characters on the show are not afraid to speak what is on their mind. There are no secrets. Facebook has just the free feature you're looking for, thanks to its recent privacy changes. The hack, first publicized by blogger Max Klein, repurposes a Facebook feature that lets people find their friends on Facebook by scanning through e-mail addresses in their contact list. But as Klein points out, a rogue marketer could take a list of 1,000 e-mail addresses, either legally or illegally collected — and upload those through a dummy account — which then lets the user see all the profiles created using those addresses. Given Facebook's ubiquity and most people's reliance on a single e-mail address, the harvest could be quite rich. The method spots imitations of works by Peter Bruegel the Elder

A simple method to distinguish artistic fakes and imitations has been demonstrated by researchers. The approach, known as "sparse coding", builds a virtual library of an artist's works and breaks them down into the simplest possible visual elements. Verifiable works by that artist can be rebuilt using varying proportions of those simple elements, while imitators' works cannot. The work is reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Nearly a month ago, Intel and AMD announced a settlement of $1.25 billion to end the disputes between the companies. Bundle up and get ready to watch a fiery lightshow stirred up by dead comets in Earth's upper atmosphere during the cold of winter in the dead of night. The annual Geminid meteor shower is expected to peak mid-December. Considered one of the more reliable showers by those in the meteor-watching business, the Geminids almost always put on a great show. "You could expect to see over 100 meteors per hour during the peak viewing," said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Office. "We do know that the origin of the Geminids is a Near-Earth object called 3200 Phaeton," said Yeomans. Since all other meteors showers are due to the sand-sized particles from active comets, it seems reasonable to assume that Phaeton is, or at least was, a comet. This year the peak of the Geminids is expected the night of December 13/14 (9:10 pm PST/12:10 am EST/05:10 UT), coinciding with a nearly perfect new moon. It seems a lot of people, players in the game and viewers alike, have forgotten that Survivor is a game as well as a TV show. The people on the show of Survivor are contestants competing for the grand prize of a million dollars. The rules of the game are simple: Do whatever it takes to be in the final three and then get enough people on the jury to vote for you. What a contestant does for a living, how much money they make, or how cute they are should not influence a jurors vote, but it does time and time again.
